Caption this!

A great vintage photo of a woman feeding hundreds of chickens outside a large hen house...  I don't know that I would want to be standing where she is.  I wonder what she's thinking?  What do you think?
Caption this -

The back of this card is equally interesting:

Mailed to Mr & Mrs. Paule Krause in Wasuasau, WI in 1915.  The card says, (to the best of my ability to read the faded writing):
"My Dears- This is the poultry house about 1/3 of size showing + some poultry  These pictures was (sic) taken in Aug. I think we was (sic) not settled in the house at time yet.  Will write letter later. Lovingly David. (?)

A stay at the Plaza Hotel

Looks like a great place for a holiday weekend stay, in Wheeling, West Virginia.  I can't wait to eat that the "adjoining restaurant."  Chicken in the Rough sounds delicious, doesn't it?  The back of the card announces this motel's many amenities:
This is an undated, un-circulated, vintage postcard boasting:
MWM Color-Litho "Bursheen" Finished, Made only by MWM Co. Aurora, MO
Even if it is a bit crumpled, its a beauty.

Vintage Notecards

Here's another set of vintage notecards. They are flat, with a postcard-like back.  The little images are sweet.  Feel free to use for your own project.  Simply click on the image, then right click to save to your own files.   Perfect to use for your own notecards, collages, scrapbooking or other paper project.

Jack Rabbit

Saddling up big Jack
The text on the back of this silly postcard says, "It is not unusual to break these fellows and use them for ranch work."   This is an unused, color photo postcard, printed in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  The Jackrabbit and Jackalope are a popular subject for western postcards.  I have several in my collection, including this one.

This is a great vintage photo postcard of a man in uniform.  There is no message or notation on the back.   What do you think?  What's the story?

Caption this:

"Welcome Home, Soldier!"

Fresh Blackberries

This card is copyright 1910 by Edward H Mitchell, San Francisco.  It is a fine example of a large fruit advertising card.  The text at the top says: "A carload of blackberries from_____________"
The back of the card, unused, would be a great image for a do-it-yourself card, collaging or scrapbooking.

The Big One Got Away

This vintage postcard features a supersized fish on the back of a GTO.  The front caption says "One of the Small Ones" The back says, "The Big One Got Away."  This card is undated, published by Petley.

United Airlines

A nice vintage travel card.  This one was mailed in 1949, with a one cent stamp.

The reverse text is interesting, too.

Back to School

I love this humorous vintage note card.  Since my kids went back to school last week, I thought it might be appropriate...

Laundry Line Notes

I have been finding more treasures - looking through boxes that have been stored away for years or while cleaning out the drawers of an old dresser.  Post cards, note cards, greeting cards galore!  Here's the first few to share, from a set of pretty note cards I found in the back of a drawer of an old desk; there are about 10 different designs, here are two, with the center one being what the backs look like - a little post card.
I love the kistchy laundry theme .  These would be great for scrapbooking or collage.  Feel free to "borrow" and use the image.  Right click the image and save to your computer for later use.  There are a few more images in this collection, I will post them over the next few weeks.  Enjoy!

Caption this!

What do you think this old cowyboy would be saying in this photo.  I assume it's a re-enactment of sorts of a "Wild West" scene.

Caption this:
"C'mon, Bess, you need more git up in your giddy-up!"

Vintage Bathing Beauty

A simple, vintage bathing beauty... I am not sure what she's lounging on, but it doesn't look comfortable. The back of the card has no identifying marks or name, perhaps she's a movie starlet from a time gone by.

Googly Gator

This googly gator gets me every time - he has a squeaker embedded in between two layers of card.  When ever I pull a new card to post, he gives a squeak!

Friday, July 15, 2011

Caption this!

The caption that comes with this image is "The first one I landed"  But surely something more clever than that is running through this fisherman's head.  This card is undated, but the image and paper indicate it is quite old.
What do you think this chap would say?

No. 7 Lover's Lane

No. 7 LOVER'S lANE, SAINT JO. by EUGENE FIELD.

Ah! Sweet the hours of springtime,
When the heart inclines to woo,
And it's deemed all right for the gallow wight
To do what he wants to do.

This is a sweet, but odd, vintage card with a funny little poem.  There is no other additional information on the card.  What to you make of the sweet verse?

Welcome to my Kanga-Room

Thought I'd send you a picture of our room!
I think the color travel card is so funny.  I am not sure what the yo-yo has to do with the scene, but the Kangaroo looks pretty annoyed.

Caption this!

The back simply says Souvenir Chicago.

This is a silly card - probably a photo-prop with a hole for the person's head.  It is odd because it looks so disembodied. The signature on the front is hard to read, perhaps "Jill Carroll"?
What was this person thinking?!?
Caption this:
"Help, Help!  I'm stuck!  Get me out of here!"

Naughty Boys

I think this card is fun for it's naughty image - with those cute innocent boys.  Just the thing some little boys would do...
This illustrated postcard was sent in 1979, however the paper quality, printing and image would indicate that it's much older.  There is no caption on the back, however there is an identifying stamp.  I have looked a bit into the  markings on the backs of old postcards, but this was one I couldn't readily find.  Do you know the maker of this mark?

Unfortunately it's somewhat obscured by the writing.  It's interesting that the older postcard makers used some sort of printing stamp to mark their cards.  This is helpful when trying to identify the date and origin of the card.  Leave me a comment if you can offer some more information for this card.

A girl and her dog

A langorous [sic] mermaid and her adorable pet add to the
glamour of this Dexter beauty scene.
I think the caption on the back of this card is almost as cheesy as the photo on the front.  This is a Genuine Natural Color card, Made by Dexter Press, Inc.  Looking at the image, I would guess it was from the late 50's.

HOT!

It's been HOT here!  This funny illustrated postcard comes in many incarnations, each with a different desert-climate city on the top panel of the sign.  I have several of them, each with a different city.

Western Saturday Night

I love this silly card from the 50's.  It's fun to look at all the detail that went into this illustration.
Is this what your Saturday night looks like?

Caption this!

A unique vintage photo postcard of a woman holding a flower wreath around her face, with one big blossom perched atop her head.  The imges of people are blurred in the background.

What do you think she's thinking?

"Really, now, I am not sure this is what I signed up for."

As part of Friendship Friday, add a caption to my Friday postcards.  Take a look at The Best Hearts are Crunchy, where she hosts Postcard Friendship Friday, every Friday.

A Study in Knees

This is such an interesting vintage postcard.  It is a color enhanced photograph - the title says
"Study in Knees at Cypress Gardens in Beautiful Florida."
Perhaps it's meant to be sexy - showing so much knee...

Vacation is over

I thought this was a humorous vintage card - it pretty much sums it up.
Now, to get back to reality.

Don't try this at home...

Another fun vacation card - you can see where my mind is... still on vacation!
This one depicts the Kwahamot Water Ski Shows in Tomahawk, Wisconsin.
Do miss it the next time you're there!

Ocean Girls

Another fabulous vintage vacation postcard.  This one shows four friends running out of the ocean.  Notice the men in the background.
What a great image!
Enjoy summer!

Wild, wild West

Maybe your vacation is taking you to the wild, wild west...

Enjoy Cattle Punching on a Jack Rabbit!

This is a great travel postcard featuring a supersized rabbit.  I guess it's meant to be funny, but it reminds me a of a B-horror sci-fi flick from the 60's.

Here is another faded old photo card....

The ladies on the bench didn't seem to have much detail, until I used the auto correct.  What a difference!  These two are perched on the ends of the bench, certainly to make way for a clear view of the house behind them.
The ladies are certainly enjoying the day in their fancy hats. And look at that estate behind them!  Wow!  What do you think they are talking about?

Happy Birthday, Marilyn!

"I don't mind living in a man's world
as long as I can be a woman in it."
-Marilyn Monroe

This is a great vintage Marilyn Monroe photo card.  It's too bad it's damaged, but I still love the color and vibrant look that she has.  Printed on the back are the words, "Thinking of you."  I am not sure when the photo was taken, perhaps a Marilyn expert can help me out.  The card itself was mailed in 1972.
Today would have been her 85th Birthday.  Happy Birthday, Marilyn!

Aquamaids on Parade

This is one of my all time favorite beach cards:
I think these 6 ladies are fabulous!  Mailed in 1960, this color photo card, is a great advertisement for Florida tourism.  The text on the back says:
"AQUAMAIDS ON PARADE
The beautiful group of girls have
made the sport of water skiing popular over the
whole world by performing wonderful stunts
on skis during the four ski shows held daily
at Florida Cypress Gardens."

Heartiest Congratulations!

A beautiful, embossed congratulations card.  This one has lovely violets and shamrocks.  It is perfect for the season:  Congratulations on your (you fill in the blank) wedding, graduation, new baby, job, etc...

Another wise looking woman from an old, vintage black and white photo card.  She is dressed for the photo - hat, scarf, gloves and a fancy skirt.  No identifying markings on this card.  I wonder what her story is...
Caption this....
"Now look here, hurry up an take the darned picture.
No body going to mess with me!"

Vacation in the Ocean State

This one is a great travel card for the State of Rhode Island - not always the first place I think of for sun and the beach - but, it looks great in this card, doesn't it!

Wild Rose

A great reproduction, color postcard, labeled "Rosie 1909"
I love how goofy she is - what a silly card.

She looks like a wise woman, doesn't she?  What advice do you think she would give?
This one is from an unused vintage black and white photo with a basic postcard back.

Caption this...
"Now, look here, deary, don't do anything I wouldn't do!"

Vacation, anyone?

This is a nice tourist card from Fisherman's Warf in San Fransisco.  Funny card, though.  Look at all the people in the background who weren't really part of the photo.  They guy in the hat, on the right is wondering what the heck is going on!  Not sure all the flailing crabs will entice me to a vacation.

Wednesday, May 11, 2011

Another little piggy...

This is a lighter take on the pig card:

A fun vacation card proclaiming: "Met a lot of suckers here!"
The illustrations is a bit playful and fun on this color, vintage postcard.

Monday, May 9, 2011

This little piggy...

This card is not very glamorous!  A color photo of a sow and her piglets - the back of the card says "Almost a Dozen."  And, if you count, there are eleven little piggies in the photo.

Flowers for Mom

Happy Mother's Day!
This is a lovely embossed and gilded flower postcard.  The back is a blank, traditional postcard back with not identifying markings.  The front is colored, cut out, and embossed.  It really is a pretty card.  Perfect for mom on Mother's Day!
Have a lovely day!

Caption this!

This is an interesting old photo card.  It seemed so faded, I hesitated posting it onto the blog.

Original photo - faded and forlorn.
But when I used the "auto color correct" the details came through.  I think that the details are so interesting.  They seem to be sitting on some porch steps in front of a door, there's a rug beneath their feet.  She has a bird pattern on her stockings.  He's wearing a large pinkie ring and white socks.
Antique photo postcard, color corrected.
The postcard was used, but there is also writing that says "Mabel + Jim" What's their story?
